Lingvo European Dictionary App Reviews
Learning languages and working in multi-language environment I use Lingvo everyday on all my devices (both OSX and iOS). Dictionary is great, pop up feature is very helpful (works much better for me than native OSX definition feature). Really nice product!
-The interface is extermely poor, no option to hide examples on the fly - have to read through a large article to find what youre looking for. -app is slow, heavy graphic design apps loads faster! -registration on lingvo.ru website is impossible - you cannot get a serial number from this app = NO TECH SUPPORT! -CRASHES FREQUENTLY. if you need a dictionary for work, this app will slow you down! every few words it will randomly crash, when you restart you have to look up from the beginning -useless sidebar with list of dictionaries always shows up, you can hide it, but every new window pops it up automatically, no preference setting to remember the sidebar state. -dictionary does not remember the previous state - every time you close the app, any translations youve looked up are gone. -no abilitiy to add custom dictionaries or modify existing entries -tech support is non-existent, if you have a problem or a question, go to forums, google, anywhere because ABBYY will not help! overall impression: the app has limited potential, but the execution is TERRIBLE. it would be a good beta test, but IT IS NOT worth $60! save your money for a better app. AVOID AVOID AVOID
This ‘update’ is a mockery of all your mac users! Instead of working on a new version you keep holding up this obsolete software and pretending that it’s OK… not to mention bugs and inconveniences it contains.
There is no updates about 3 years. I think this translator have gotten bad reputation. Not sure that version 2.0, if it will be, will be very successful. You should make this update free for old users.
Finally!
It seems to me that you finally fixed main bugs in your program and added OS X 10.10 support. Now I’m glad!
I was very disappointed to find that the version for Mac doesn’t have American pronunciation which was one of the main points to buy it. Other than that evrything is fine so far.
The best dictionaries into terrible app. GUI is awful and not handy. Im not sure they had designer, but pretty sure you they have no taste. Id like to use this content in OSX Dictionary.app.
I ve been using this dictionary since 2004 on Windows because It has best dictionaries comparing to others in my opinion. After I migrated to MACs, I tried all Existing Dictionaries for MACs and could not find anything similar to Lingvo. I could not believe my eyes when I saw a MAC edition. I installed it. The UI could be better, but I dont care. I have my Lingvo for MAC. This purchase made my day. Thank you so much…..
When I saw this was being offered at a discount, I decided to give it a go. After working with it for a while, I must say that I would never buy it at the full price of $80 because at that price point one would expect something far more polished than this. - chunks of gray background in dictionary entries simply disappear if you click on them. - also, if you accidentally double-click on an empty area in an entry, itll open a new window saying "no translation found for " ". - If you open a word-form window for a word that is both a noun, a verb, etc., these headers will not fit into the small window, apparently the authors never heard of word-wrap. A funny example is the russian translation for the word "star - it has four headers, all being "noun" - The scroll bar as well as some other areas look outdated in OS X Lion. - NEW BUG FOUND: if you translate any word into a particular language, say English to French, you get a separate window with the translation. If you change the target language for the same word, you still get the old window with the French translation, so you have to specifically close that window first. Pretty annoying in a fast workflow. So generally the content is ok, but the annoying little bugs give you the feeling of an unfinished beta version.
the good: There is a LOT of information in here. I bought this for Russian, and with all the included dictionaries pretty much anything I would ever want to find is here. now for the bad: There is no documentation explaining the extensive symbols and abbreviations within the definitions. This makes much of the information unusable. In addition, the program is advertised as having phrasebooks. However, the phrasebooks are Russian-English, and you can hear all the phrases read to you in perfect English--but no Russian! The verb tables are what I was really looking forward to. Again, all in Russian, with no explanation. This is a resource for Russian-speakers, not for English speakers. Im going to try to get my money back.
So, first of all - really bad UI. Pretty sure they didnt have a person thinking about it. Compared to windows version, theres no tutor. Even iOS version seem to be better than this. Overall, $80 feels like a robbery for what you get.
I read reviews and decided to buy it though, because I used Abbyy Lingov for PC since 2007. I was happy with PC version: I was able to point the mouse and have Internet words translated; it looked nicer, there was history button; it could translate words from the word when pointing. BUT, Mac version looks like REAL DEMO. I am very very upset. I wonder why Apple sells it to us?!
the app is good, it does the job - provide me with access to perfect dictionaries and have very thoughtout interface; and its quick. yes its not "shiny" from UI prospective like other ppl. might noticed, however I use it via hot-keys and always receive translation how Im expecting it to appear (pop-up or window). I love what I usually see when operating with lingvo. Still need to point out that not using it very often, for someone UI could be not so attractive, but hey, you want translation first! imho not too much, not too less, just what you need.
As many of the reviewers here, I switched from PC to Mac recently. Working primarily on translations, my most important worries were: Will I be able to use Microsoft Word on Mac? Will I be able to use Lingvo for my translations? The answer to the first question was easy: yes, I got Microsoft Office and it worked like a charm. Then I found this Mac version of Lingvo, and first I hesitated to purchase it because it was pretty expensive, and the reviews were not flattering. I bought it today with a 50% discount for $29.99, and honestly, I dont understand why some people gave it one- and two-star ratings. Perhaps, earlier versions were not as good. But the version that I purchased today (let me look up the date - on March 17, 2013) works just like I would use it on PC. Good product. If you are hesitating because of low ratings, dont worry. I recommend this app to anyone who needs a good English-Russian dictionary for translations on a daily basis. Five stars, and not one less!
while i find $60-80 for the app is a little too much, $29.99 is def a bargain so i finally decided to buy one for mac. the rating seems a little too low and to tell the truth i couldnt understand why anyone would give it one star. this is the best dictionary i know. dont hesitate to buy it!
program on mac has never been a good as on windows. However before maverick lingvo worked in what they call cocoa type programs. However, since maverick only works in safari. what is going on. would not have bought this program. feel cheated. have tried to relate problem to tech support but all i get is excuses and unintelligable emails. please fix this program and make it as good if not better than windows version.
This program would be very difficult to use, except that there are good macro programs available (like Keyboard Maestro). By making a macro that opens Lingvo, pastes text, and hit enter, I was able to make a good “lookup word” shortcut, which suddenly makes the program very helpful. This functionality should be included in Lingvo, though. Nevertheless, for value considering all the dictionaries, and for the fact that there’s really nothing else out there, it gets 5 stars.
I bought this in 2013 thinking that Lingvo would send me free updates to keep my dictionary running with every new IOS release. Uh uh. They stopped updating last year’s release and just re-released a new software package. So this package might work with Yosemite but give it a year, it won’t work on any new IOS.
I just purchased ABBYY Lingvo for my Mac and so far I am very impressed with the power of it. The pop-up translations when I’m reading Russian news online is extremely helpful. The dictionary lookup has been great so far, and I’m looking up a lot of words I cannot otherwise get a decent translation of. I’m just learning to use it, but so far it has been great. And it is working with El Capitan.
